Core · Refrigeration cycle

An R-410A system reads 118 psig on the suction gauge. The P‑T chart gives 40°F saturation at that pressure, and the suction line thermometer reads 65°F. What is the superheat, and what does it tell you?

Exam trap

Never pressure-test a system with oxygen or compressed air. Oxygen and refrigerant oil can detonate; compressed air adds moisture on top of the oxygen. Use dry nitrogen with a regulator — one of the most-tested safety points on the exam.

What “Universal” takes

Core
Ozone science, the Clean Air Act, recovery and recycling rules, refrigerant handling, safety. Every technician takes it.
Type I
Small appliances — factory-sealed systems with 5 lb of refrigerant or less. Household refrigerators, window units, vending machines.
Type II
High-pressure systems — split A/C, heat pumps, and supermarket racks running R-22, R-410A, or R-404A.
Type III
Low-pressure systems — centrifugal chillers on R-123 or R-514A, serviced under a vacuum.
